Watch Your Mouth:

Not what comes out but what goes in. Sure, you might follow the two-second rule when you drop your Tofutti Cutie on your kitchen floor, but you won't want to give these disgusting hidden animal ingredients the time of day.

Casein—Whey's cousin, casein is made from curdled milk. Yuck!

Gelatin—Rhymes with "skeleton." Coincidence? I think not. Gelatin is a protein made by boiling cows' and pigs' skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Jell-O? Hell, no!

Honey—Sure, honey tastes sweet, but you'll get a bad taste in your mouth when you learn how it's "harvested."

From a former beekeeper: "[T]ypically, beekeepers are gloved and netted to avoid stings (nearly every bee who stings will die due to her entrails being pulled from her body attached to her stinger.) Then the hives are opened as quickly as possible and the bees are ‘smoked.' Smoke from a smoldering fire carried in a ‘smoker' is pumped into the hive and the bees are ‘calmed.' In spite of this, the combs are pulled quickly and many bees are crushed in the process. When a bee is hurt, she releases a chemical message that alerts and activates the hive members who proceed to attack the intruder—giving their lives in the process."

Lard—Lard is such a gross word, it almost makes you wonder why they just don't call it what it is: "Fat from hog abdomens."

Pepsin—If the thought of eating lard turns your stomach, stay away from pepsin, a clotting agent from pigs' stomachs, used in some cheeses and vitamins.

Rennet—Certain words just make you cringe, like coagulate, congeal, clot—which is what rennet, an enzyme taken from baby calves' stomachs, is used for in cheese production.

Stearic Acid—It may sound less gross than "lard," but stearic acid, which often rears its ugly head in chocolate and vitamins, comes from a fatty substance taken from slaughtered pigs' stomachs—or from cows, sheep, or dogs and cats euthanized in animal shelters. Still want to chew on that piece of Fido?

Cetyl Palmitate—Check your head if you're using margarine that contains cetyl palmitate, the fancy term for the waxy oil derived from sperm whales' heads or from dolphins. "I can't believe it's not ... oh, wait. It is? Whale head wax?"

Urea—Urea comes from piss and other "bodily fluids." It's used to "brown" baked goods, like pretzels. Um, yeah. And the oven is for ...?

When going to any convenience store, take a look around and see what other food services they offer. Often, you can get made-to-order sandwiches and salads. For instance, Speedway gas stations can make up MTO veggie wraps and sandwiches, and you can also snag bagels, garlic fries (minus the cheese), and cheese-free nachos.

fast food

Some diehard vegans have chosen to ignore the fast-food market because of its meat-pimping ways, but the bottom line is this: There will never be vegan or vegetarian options at these places unless the vegetarians and vegans support the changes. Some of us never thought we'd see the day that Burger King would cater to vegetarians by offering veggie burgers. Flesh-eaters will see that it is possible to exist without eating animals if even a place like McDonald's offers veggie burgers. Also, for some people who travel often (like a lot of the bands that support us), fast food is often one of their only options! Gone are the days that road-tripping for vegetarians consisted of mini-mart snacking and salads! Let's hope that these changes keep occurring!

To keep up with the times, McDonald's is now offering a McVeggie Burger in California, New York City, and Canada. Because this is considered a trial run, we encourage everyone to support this tremendous addition so that the rest of the world can taste the damned thing!

Remember going to Baskin-Robbins when you were just a wee tot? Well, fear not—you can keep on strollin' down memory lane. Go for the dairy-free and gelatin-free Ices and Sorbets, which are just as yummy and cooling as ice cream, sans the pus.

The French fries, hash-brown nuggets, breadsticks, English muffins, and CrissCuts at Carl's Jr. are all vegan. In the restaurant, there is an all-you-can-eat salad bar that offers tons of fresh vegetables and a three-bean salad that can be toppedwith fat-free Italian dressing. Finally, the restaurant offers Great Stuff™ baked potatoes, which can be ordered with all-vegetable margarine.

Head to Wendy's for a plain baked potato or Deluxe Garden Salad (ask for “no cheese”) with the red Italian dressing, or a large order of French fries. You can also ask for a veggie sandwich, which includes everything that would normally be on the burger, but without the meat—they even have a button for it.

Several of Taco Bell's dishes can be veganized by simply deleting a few ingredients. The “7 Layer Burritos” can be vegan with five layers—just forgo the cheese and sour cream. The tacos, nachos, and Mexican pizzas are newly vegan after withdrawing the meat, cheese, and sour cream.

Subway's Veggie Delite—on Italian bread, minus cheese and mayo—is deelish! Want a great tip to spice things up a bit? After visiting Subway, run to the nearest grocery store and purchase some fake lunch meats and load your sub up!

We never said this stuff was good for you, and Arby's is no exception. OK, so you can get the garden salad or the side salad with Italian dressing and the baked potato, of course. But then go for the French fries and the potato cakes dipped in the Arby's Sauce. Finish it all off with an apple or cherry turnover.

A great alternative to Subway is Quiznos Sub, which offers a veggie sub that's filled with guacamole, black olives, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mushrooms—just make sure to order it without the cheese and red-wine vinaigrette dressing and ask them to smother it with balsamic vinaigrette dressing instead. Grab a side garden salad, chips, and a soda, and you're good to go.

If you take a pit stop at good ol' Roy Rogers, you'll find baked potatoes, French fries, sides of veggies, and even a salad bar. Plus, their mashed potatoes are vegan if you forgo the gravy.

Swing by a Petro truck stop and you'll find the Iron Skillet restaurant. Here you can refuel with their stacked salad bar and spaghetti galore.

While Burger King's BK Veggie™ is no longer vegan, you still may want to recommend it as a vegetarian option to your meat-eating friends.

Please keep in mind that having a veggie burger at Burger King is still a positive thing for animals as it confirms in people's minds that vegetarianism is mainstream, making it a more appealing lifestyle for people who might not have otherwise considered it. For that reason, we encourage people not to attack Burger King for its decision to change the recipe of the BK Veggie, but rather to write polite letters thanking the company for having a vegetarian option and asking that it be made suitable for vegans as well by switching to a delicious soy-based vegan patty

make a move for a booth

Eating out while eating vegan isn't like it used to be. Restaurants have learned that if they don't have a vegetarian item on the menu, they're going to be ignored. Don't be afraid to see what's out there. If nothing strikes your fancy, most kitchens will readily whip up something to your specifications.

Most places have veggie burgers or veggie sandwiches, like Bennigan’s and Hard Rock Cafe, for instance. Bennigan’s has Boca burgers—just order them without the cheese—and super salads, and Hard Rock has yummy veggie sandwiches and salads to dig into.

Pretty much everyone on the planet’s been to Subway; who can resist that freshly baked bread and all those veggies? With so many options, there’s no way you’re leaving that place hungry.

If you’re in New England, hit the nearest O’Naturals, and be sure to take your appetite. This chain’s brand of all-natural fast food will make even mom happy—you know how she worries about your health. It’s got a great selection of veggie food, and all the vegan options are clearly marked, which we love and know you will too.

Chuck E. Cheese, Little Caesars, and Papa John's all use vegan sauce and dough, while Pizza Hut uses vegan sauce and its Thin 'n Crispy and dessert crusts are vegan. Go ahead and get a cheeseless pie and decorate it with as many veggies as your little heart desires.

The Sizzling Vegetable Skillet and the steamed vegetable plate are your vegan options at Applebee's. Of course, you can also play with its meaty and cheesy dishes to see if you can come up with a nice vegan plate o' goodness that the chef would be willing to make up just for you.

If you're vegan and you're into eating healthy (or if you're dragged blindly by your family), the Boston Market does have a few options that will certainly fill the gaping hole of hunger in your tummy. The chunky cinnamon applesauce, cranberry walnut relish, fruit salad, steamed vegetables, zucchini marinara, apple cobbler, and tossed salad (sans croutons and dressing) are all vegan. The folks at the Market are also happy to customize sandwiches upon request.

Bruegger's Bagel Bakery has several breakfast and lunch options for vegans, including its blueberry, chocolate chip, cinnamon sugar, cranberry orange, pumpernickel, and rosemary olive oil bagels, which can be topped with fresh vegetables, Dijon mustard, or vegan hummus spread. Bruegger's also serves several vegetarian sandwiches, which can be veganized by omitting the cheese and dressing, and several vegan soups, including Chili Cilantro, Gazpacho, Tuscan, Minestrone, Garden Split Pea, Marcello Minestrone, Roasted Roma Tomato, Vegetable Tomato Lentil, and Ratatouille.

All of Manhattan Bagel's bagels are vegan except for jalapeño cheddar cheese and the egg bagels, and its bialys, a flattened onion-and-poppy-seed bagel, is vegan. The Manhattan Grille and The Vegetable Garden sandwiches, which can be made on a bagel, a roll, or a tortilla, can be veganized by tossing out the spreads and cheese.

It's nice that a place like Denny's—known for its standard all-American breakfasts, lunches, and dinners and nostalgically remembered by others for its bottomless cups of coffee and late-night gossiping—even has some vegan options. Denny's vegan goods include oatmeal and tons o' fixin's, English muffins, bagels, grits, applesauce, fresh fruit, baked potatoes that can be topped with several vegetable choices, vegetable plates, seasoned French fries, garden salads with light Italian dressing or oil and vinegar, and sandwiches that can be made with several vegetable options.

Thanks to our dedicated Street Teamers (go ahead, pat yourself on the back—no one's looking) who contacted Ruby Tuesday, the company has added a vegan burger to its menu once again. Just ask them to hold the mayo and cheese, and it's vegan ... it even says so right on the menu! And be sure to hit their fantastic salad bar while you're there, too.

Launch into Johnny Rockets for a Streamliner, the restaurant's Boca Burger with grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickle, and mustard.

The Macaroni Grill has tons of choices. All the pasta is vegan—just choose the garlic/olive oil sauce. The pizza, calzone crust, and sauce are vegan, so just add your veggies. The balsamic vinaigrette and Italian Peasant Bread are also totally vegan.

At Chili's, you can get the tostada chips and salsa to start, then do the veggie quesadillas (minus the cheese and sour cream)—have them load 'em up with veggies—and the Cadillac fajitas (minus the tortured animal).

Here's the bottom line, kids: You can walk into any restaurant you'd like and find something edible that's vegan. You simply make educated choices and ask the server as many questions as necessary and then you eat. It's not difficult. It is empowering. No more excuses.
Another great place for bagels, breads, soups, salads and sandwiches is Panera Bread. Each location varies its menu options, so just ask what's vegan in the joint before ordering. If you get a bagel, hook it up with the Roasted Garlic Hummus and your taste buds will thank you.

The benefit of going to Cici's Pizza is not only the cheap prizes, but these guys are all about made-to-order, speciality, fresh foodage and will deliver decked-out vegan pizzas to your door. Besides pizza, Cici's offers an excellent pasta and salad buffet. Again, make sure you ask the vegan status of each item before chowing down.

If you're fortunate enough to live near a P.F. Chang's, then you'd best save up some dough and get your butt over there. It is one of the most veg-friendly nonvegetarian restaurants around. It has an amazing vegetarian menu and you can get any entrée vegan. We're talking jazzed up tofu dishes (like Orange Peel Tofu) and out-of-this-world veggie appetizers (Tofu Lettuce Wraps). Go there now!
